Class Schedules
Are 12 Hours Enough?
Many parents have asked whether 12 hours a week in the core curriculum is enough to give their students the academic foundation they need. These hours are not the total amount of time that most students will be spending on all subjects.
Most schools do not segregate out the core classes, but mix them throughout the school day. For example, a student might attend an art class and then move to an English class, followed by choir, then P.E., then math or science.
If we scrutinize this closely, it will be found that most students will spend approximately 12 – 14 hours in a core subject and another 16 – 18 hours in electives during the week.
So, for more than a decade Dr. Kimber and his wife experimented with the amount of class time for their private schools. They found, after surveying many public schools, faculty and students, that in the public schools only 12.5 hours, on average, were spent studying the core curriculum.
After all the passing time, roll calls, bathroom breaks and correcting homework the students core time was very limited. This led him to use only 12 hours per week in the core subjects.
The students get intense instruction and training in the core subjects as well as a love of learning, then many go and spend extra time at home studying what they really enjoy.
